The Truth About AI SEO

Everyone Says They Do AI SEO. Almost None of Them Actually Do.

TLDR

Agencies are claiming they can get you recommended by AI, but most are only offering surface level content tweaks. Real AI visibility requires off site authority, trusted citations, community presence, diversified content and ongoing experimentation. Backlinks still matter. External credibility matters even more. LLMs pull from networks, not isolated pages. The battlefield is bigger than your website and the brands that embrace this reality today will be the ones chosen.

Every agency in the country woke up one morning, saw the rise of AI search, and suddenly crowned themselves experts at getting brands recommended inside large language models. Adorable.

Then you read their actual strategy. And the whole thing collapses like a folding chair at a cheap backyard barbecue. (I'm even chuckling at this one)

Someone recently sent me six proposals from agencies claiming they could optimize for LLM visibility. I read them the way some people read true crime. With fascination. And concern. Every proposal talked about AI search and the rise of LLM powered recommendations. Sounds impressive until you scroll to the part where they reveal the plan. At that point, it becomes painfully clear that they have no plan at all.

Most of them offered the same list.
Rewrite a few paragraphs.
Add some FAQs.
Make your writing sound like a Roomba that discovered poetry.
Throw in some schema.
Cross their fingers.

This is not strategy. This is sweeping the floor before guests arrive.

And I will be honest because it's my full time job. I recommended some of those tactics early on. I still do. They help.
But after running test after test and watching how LLMs actually choose what they cite, I learned the real truth.

The off site battlefield is massive.
And the checklist got a lot bigger.

What the Data Actually Shows

LLMs prefer clarity, structure and genuine value. Studies show they cite content that is well formatted, answer driven and easy for machines to interpret. (Search Engine Land) Another analysis found that LLM optimized content requires more than SEO tricks. It demands true clarity, factual substance and logical structure. (SE Ranking) Backlinks and earned authority still matter too. High quality links have a measurable impact on AI search visibility. (Semrush) Context and trust carry heavy weight. LLMs look for external signals of credibility rather than relying solely on what brands say about themselves. (Insightland) A research paper showed that AI search tilts toward third party sources, community threads, directories and earned media rather than your home page. (arXiv)

So the data is clear.
On site work matters but it is not enough.
The game is bigger now.

What Actually Improves Your Odds Of Being Chosen

  1. Give LLMs content that is machine ready
Use structure, logic and clarity. Not fluff.
  2. Build strong external authority
Earn real backlink equity and credible mentions across trusted sources.
  3. Spread your footprint across platforms
LLMs judge you by your entire ecosystem, not your home page.
  4. Track the sources LLMs actually cite
Measure and adapt instead of guessing.
  5. Accept that the advantage is temporary
What works today can shift tomorrow. Keep moving.

The Truth For Today

The off site battlefield is bigger, louder and more influential than anyone expected.
The brands that learn to command it will be the ones chosen.

At least for now. This truth will change again. The frontier always does. The people who win are the ones who experiment before everyone else finally realizes the rules have shifted.

I was early in recommending some of these tactics. I still believe in them. But now I see the full landscape. This is not about adjustments. It is about building a system, a network and a reputation across the entire digital world.

Most agencies are not ready for that kind of work.
Most businesses are not being told the truth.
And that creates an opening for anyone willing to move faster and think bigger. Are you ready?

FAQ

What does AI SEO actually mean now?

It means optimizing your entire digital presence for the way LLMs choose, cite and trust information. It is not just on site SEO. It is content clarity, off site authority, citations and digital footprint expansion.

Do content tweaks still help?

Yes. Structured and clear content can improve your odds, but only slightly. Studies show LLMs also rely heavily on external signals and third party credibility.

Are backlinks still important?

Yes. High quality backlinks continue to influence AI visibility. Recent research confirms that authority signals still matter in AI search models.

Why does off site work matter so much?

LLMs do not want to trust a single source. They want patterns. They want consensus across directories, forums, publications and trusted communities.

How fast is this changing?

Faster than traditional SEO ever did. You can no longer wait for best practices. By the time they become public, the advantage has already moved.

How do I get ahead of competitors?

You move early. You experiment. You build authority across multiple platforms. And you treat AI visibility as a living system, not a task list.
